Microsoft started tackling the Chromebook affair last year when it began rolling out super affordable Windows 8.1 with Bing laptop alternatives.

And now, with Windows 10 at our door step, Microsoft will continue its plan of offering affordable notebooks. One of the first models of this kind has already been announced as the Acer Aspire One Cloudbook which, according to Windows Central, will become available on the market in August.

Towards the end of summer, we’re going to see an 11.6-inch model arrive on the market for $169 / €154, but a 14-inch model is also on its way.

Currently, Microsoft is offering affordable Windows laptops like the Acer Aspire E11, ASUS EeeBook X205 and HP Stream 11, but you’ll have to pay around $200 / €183 for them. Thus, when it arrives, the Acer Cloudbook will be one of the most affordable Windows machines to date.

Windows notebooks are poised to get cheaper

Chromebooks today sell for as little as $149 / €136 and continue to be quite popular among users due to their ease of use, relatively secure experience and quick startup times.

But the problem a lot of users will have with Chromebooks is that these laptops aren’t capable of running native Windows apps. On the other hand, Microsoft has been striving to make Windows run as smoothly as Chrome OS.

Going back to Acer, the company hasn’t shared the spec list of its upcoming Cloudbook, but we have to assume it will arrive with the standard 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, at least 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a low-power processor, like maybe the Intel Cherry Trail to keep things alive and going.

While Acer will be partnering up with Microsoft once again to produce Windows 10 laptops, the company is not giving up on Chrome OS either, so it will continue to launch Chromebooks too.

We already told you last month that the company was prepping the C738T model, which will be a convertible-style Chromebook powered by Intel’s Braswell platform.

The notebook will also come equipped with an 11-inch IPS display with 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, 4GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 720p camera.
